Electrical Safety

You may use your own electrical appliances in your room or flat provided that they have been checked for safety and registered with the Home Bursary. A form for registering appliances is available at

http://home.jesus.ox.ac.uk/offices/accommodation/earf_flats/

This measure is to reduce the risk of fire and ensures that the College fire insurance policy is not invalidated. Any unregistered items found will be removed from rooms and flats without seeking the owner’s consent, a receipt will be given and the item will only be returned once its electrical safety has been checked. There will be a charge for this of £5.00 per item.

Students should check that all personal electrical equipment used on College premises has the correct plug and that the voltage is compatible to UK supplies (220/240V). You should avoid using adaptors equipment should be fitted with the correct UK plug. It strongly recommended that you use only 220/240V electrical equipment. If in doubt about the suitability of any electrical equipment please get it checked by the Maintenance department by putting in a report via the Accommodation Faults system on the intranet.

Only electrical items designed for use in wet areas, such as electric shavers and toothbrushes, should be used in bathrooms and near water. The 2 pin sockets near the washbasins are for shavers and electric toothbrushes only. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THESE SOCKETS FOR ANY OTHER ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT.

Check all electrical appliances for safety before each user (looses or damaged wires, plug correctly fitted and secure, signs of overheating or scorching etc). Avoid trailing wires.
