Oxford University Cuppers Competition
In the Cuppers competition we reached the quarterfinals and were eliminated
by Merton College. Our team was very unlucky on that day. We could have won
the match if one of the following winning positions had been actually won:
Daniel Kapitan (White), Black to move.
A move before his opponent forced a perpetual check. In the position
Daniel's oponent played his strong move Nd4 and Daniel replied Re7.
Do you see the saving draw for black. What might be the better move
for white instead of Re7?
Just before the crucial mistake that led to a drew. What is the winning move
for white?
One move before he missed his excellent chance and eventually lost. His
mistake can be also attributed to the very sharp zeitnot he was in. Can
you see the winning (mating) move for black?
